To correct or not to correct…
Jul 9th, 2009 by S. Anderson
Recently, I have been noticing more than a fair share of errors (typos, misspellings, grammar mistakes) in the posts of the many blogs I read. I don’t know if they have always been there, if people get more lax during the summer, or if I am more sensitive to mistakes because I am not teaching right now. Who knows.
My friend, Bonnie, wrote about this and gave her blog a spelling disclaimer. And, the Pioneer Woman has mentioned her disdain for typos as well.
Now, this isn’t all to say that I won’t have an error or two now and then, as I am not claiming my perfection. I just never know how to handle the mistakes I locate on other people’s blogs.
Should I tell the writer, particularly when there is a glaring mistake in the title of the blog? Or, should I mind my own business and keep the teacher lady hiding below my surface in check? Oh, the dilemmas! Either way, if you ever find a mistake on this blog, please let me know!

For my two cents, I would greatly appreciate anyone who offered spelling corrections at my blog. Especially if the mistake were in the title! I think mistakes are often typos as opposed to truly bad spelling, but either way they don’t reflect well on the writer and sometimes make it really difficult to read! I’m taking an online photography class right now and there are TONS of errors in the written lecture material. I sometimes have to read a line several times to figure it out. Very distracting!
Please correct me! Sometimes the brain goes faster than the fingers, so it doesn’t translate properly. But I dunno if you want to correct others – some might be sensitive, others just don’t care (that would be the case if my hubby blogged).
I also would appreciate corrections to my blog. I know I have errors, mostly because I was typing too quickly and didn’t take the time to proofread. I am the sort who corrects books when I find spelling errors (anyone else tired of reading that something “peaked” someone’s interest?!).
And, um, by the way… unless you’re directly quoting PW’s blog, spelling error and all (I couldn’t get into her blog this morning to check), “disdain” is misspelled. Was that a test?
Sandi, nope, you were right! I typed it too fast. Maybe, I should just keep my mouth shut after all! It is fixed now!
No, no, no! You were supposed to say, “Of course it was a test! It was all about irony.” And we would have believed you!
Sorry! I can blame it on the pregnancy brain. I wish I was just using it as an excuse, but unfortunately, it is the truth.
Haha – like when I spelled Sherbet “Sherbert”. Yeah, that was a good one. I say just “bite your tongue”. While I hate to have spelling mistakes, and I cringe when I see spelling and grammatical errors elsewhere, no need to create bad feelings.
I’m a terrible speller, and let me tell you, spell check don’t really work if you can’t spell. I frequently use the wrong word thinking that’s how it should be spelled. The plight of bad spellers everywhere.
TELL ME…TELL ME!:-)
An older person’s perspective—Life is filled with times we need to accept responsibility for our mistakes. I don’t have a blog but I journal when I can and I see that as a place where I can freely express my thoughts without the restrictions of spelling and grammar. I think whether or not to correct depends on the writer’s purpose. Having said that, I did spell check this comment ! Love your paint colors. Lee
I would appreciate being told of an error in my blog. I’d rather be told so I can correct it than have it be immortalized for all time.
