Quilting Festival Entry 2009
Apr 18th, 2009 by Sandy
Amy over at Park City is doing this wonderful thing for all of us that can’t travel to Quilt Market. We are having a virtual quilt festival, and I thought that I would join in the fun.
My favorite quilt that I have ever worked on is actually not one that I made, well completely. It is the generational quilt I posted about last summer that I made for my mother-in-law.
This was made from a quilt top pieced by my husband’s great-grandmother. The piecing was by hand, so I decided to quilt it by hand as well.
Needless to say, it took me quite a long time to get it all done. I loved the pattern, and it made for a really pretty back, which is warm flannel!
I love the way it came out and that I was able to add my own little touch with the binding.
The funniest part was that I really didn’t like the quilt top until I got it all quilted. Taught me a valuable lesson about judging a quilt top before it’s finished!
So, thanks Amy for creating such a fun time to share our pretties!

this is SO gorgeous and well crafted. what a beautiful way to honor your ancestry and continue a lineage of fine handiwork.
It is BEAUTIFUL!
this is so lovely!! i love the back as much as the front with all the quilting!!
Very lovely. What a special treasure and heirloom for your family.
Thanks for sharing your multi-generational quilt, hope you add a label to it with your and the top maker’s information. People always ask me about finishing quilt tops and this post reminds me that most makers would be glad to see their quilts finished (in a manner that is true to the period).
Come see my favorites

That ‘s so beautiful! It makes me want to hand quilt something. It would give me something productive to do while I watch movies with my husband. That post-bedtime time is so valuable!
The quilt I posted was worked on by several people in my family too.
Wonderful quilt capturing so many great traditions.
Lovely, Your hand stitching is a wonderful finish to this piece. Great job!
Lovely quilt…you’ve made a wonderful family heirloom!
WOW!!!
It’s beautiful! I love the pattern and colors. So amazing how many different hands have had a part in it’s making – thanks for sharing!
This is so beautiful! I love that you were able to complete something started so long ago. This will make a stunning heirloom. I love the hand quilting!!

What a fantastic quilt!
I’m not sure which side I like the most,,,both are stunning! and the binding,,,what a treat!
Absolutely lovely! You’ve done such a beautiful job on the quilting and binding. Flannel is my favorite backing for quilts but I’ve discovered it’s very hard to find here.
Thanks for the tip on where to find the flannel. My primary problem is that I live in South America. Shipping is pretty expensive so I’m making do with what I can find here. Which is minimal. I live in a town of about 60,000 but there’s only a small fabric store. Currently they carry viyella (a thinner version of flannel) in light blue and light pink; that’s it. No true flannel at all. My hubby and I spent an afternoon trying to track down a bigger fabric store in Cordoba, the closest big city, but none of the ones we found had flannel at all. A friend just told me about another place to check the next time we go to Cordoba. I’m still hopeful! And if all else fails, when we go to Buenos Aires later this year I think I can find some because there is a growing community of quilters there.
