My scrap challenge!
Oct 14th, 2008 by S. Anderson
A couple of weeks ago, I decided to join jcasa::handmade in a scrap challenge. You can read all about the rules here. But, the gist was that I sent in a square of something I loved, and she sent me back ten scraps from other people in my group; I was in group #4.
This is what I got in my envelope. I didn’t do a great job of taking pictures of them the little bits of fabric I got, but you get the idea! Lots of different colors and textures. Mine is the one right on top under the postcard (blue and green flowers on a blue background). You will see it again in my project!
After looking at my scraps for a while and reading more about spider web quilts here and here, I thought it might work. I didn’t exactly know how much I was going to be able to do, but I just decided to give it a shot. This table runner is what resulted.
I love the way it turned out. Originally, I was going to try to do all three squares in the spider web pattern, but there wasn’t enough fabric. This is one of the first projects I have ever done that I really just completely let it unfold as I worked on it. It was so fun!
The yellow is from some leftovers from the curtains that are on the back door in our kitchen, and the natural fabric is this weird fake linen/muslin stuff I found at Joann’s. It all was pretty easy to work with, but the natural stuff unraveled quite a bit. Then, I just put a thin layer of interfacing in the middle and some more of the natural fabric on the back and quilted the whole thing. Afterward, I put the binding on in the fabric I had sent.
I was particularly happy that my corners are getting better. More patience is all I really needed to make it happen! And, the best news about the whole thing is that I am going to keep it for myself!
I can’t thank JCasa enough for setting this whole thing up! It was so much fun!

Sandy,
